A barn owl descends in silence, capturing the fleeting moment between flight and earth. Built in layered wood, the piece celebrates one of nature’s quietest and most joyful encounters.
For several years I have shared my evenings with a wild barn owl at the allotment. Seeing it appear across the fading light has become one of those small rituals that never loses its wonder. It hunts with effortless precision, yet there is also a gentleness to its flight that always makes me stop what I am doing and simply watch.
Coming Into Land grew from those moments. Constructed from five layers of plywood and hand-burned using pyrography, the layered form creates physical depth while echoing the movement of the bird as it reaches towards the ground. The natural grain of the timber is allowed to remain part of the work, reminding us that both the owl and the material belong to the same living world.
More than a portrait, this piece is an invitation to share a feeling. If, for just a moment, it allows someone else to experience the same quiet joy I feel whenever that owl appears over the allotment, then it has become more than wood and fire.
